New Pressure Independent VAV Controllers

  • 25.06.2023

Senticon launches new pressure independent TVR20/QVR20 VAV controllers that provide energy efficient temperature control in VAV installations. The controllers are used in conjunction with new technology pressure sensing devices and drive actuators using brushless DC motors. This innovative approach offers a very precise and accurate flow measurement, and energy savings.

The main goal of installing a Pressure Independent VAV control system is to provide good comfort and save energy. Saving energy is achieved by the capability of being able to control the Volumetric air flow entering the room at the lowest possible level and at the same time ensuring that the room temperature conditions are maintained. The lower the air flow entering the room ensures that the amount of the Primary Air and Primary Chilled Water can be reduced to a minimum, and in turn ensuring energy production reduction to the minimum.  With the accuracy of Senticon's new VAV controller solution that is able to sense and control over a complete linear curve design, the minimum air flow settings can be as required by the design criteria (the old technology designs with integrated synchronised actuator drive motors typically do not allow the minimum air flow to be set below 30% wasting lots of energy in primary energy production).

If we look at typical Pressure Independent installation used today, we have a compact VAV controller/synchronised actuator/flow sensor connected to a VAV terminal box. The required flow demand is provided by the room temperature thermostat. The minimum air flow typically cannot be lowered below 30%. In terms of the networking each device will need to have their own BACnet/Modbus interface complicating installation. If we also look at the wider picture of rooms being controlled for many current and past projects, there are many other requirements that project consulting engineer may want to add to their design.

Using Senticon's TVR/QVR20 VAV controllers these extra requirement can be catered at very little extra cost and without extra expensive field wiring, associated programming and commissioning. With benefit of  very low minimum air flow capability offering energy savings.

As an example, if your project has separate classrooms, separate offices, separate hospital rooms and many other types of similar room designs as above, the Senticon's TVR/QVR controllers can provide the following additions:-

  • Room occupancy controller/movement sensor and monitoring
  • Additional temperature control outputs to re-heat coil / thyristor
  • Air Quality CO2 and VOC Monitoring and Control
  • Temperature Boost and Setback (Occupied/Unoccupied Modes)
  • Humidity Control and Monitoring
  • Chilled and Hot Water Energy Monitoring

All information is available from a single BACnet and Modbus node simplifying the engineering and commissioning.

The Senticon VAV controllers work together with accurate Brushless DC Motors and flow sensors from Belimo, Honeywell, Siemens, Gruner and Sauter.
